Jim Carney is the founding partner of Carney Appleby Law. Jim has been practicing law in Des Moines and throughout the state of Iowa since 1975 and has tried over 150 jury trials in Iowa as well as in other states.
Jim has argued over 35 appellate cases in the Iowa Supreme Court and Court of Appeals to include several landmark decisions and cases of first impression. Additionally, he was involved in the longest civil trial in the history of Dubuque County in a trial lasting over three months resulting in a verdict for his client. Jim is unquestionably one of the most experienced trial advocates in the State of Iowa and has obtained multi-million-dollar settlements and verdicts in several cases and defense verdicts for clients he has defended.
After graduating from the University of Iowa, Jim coached golf and basketball at the United States Military Academy (West Point) while serving in the U.S. Army. He has been a very active supporter of the University of Iowa, including serving on the National Letterman’s Board and the University of Iowa Foundation Board. He is also a member of the National I-Club, the University of Iowa’s national organization of supporters of Iowa Hawkeyes athletics. Jim received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the National I-Club in 2009, and he was nominated and confirmed as the President of the National I-Club in 2015. In 2015 Jim received the Centerville High School Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater in Centerville, Iowa. Jim was inducted into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame in 2021.
